By way of disclosure, we were not paid to come down and participate in the Stain Games charity event. We went because they paid our expenses, and because I think a half million dollar commitment is more than respectable, and enough reason to lend what support we could. When I was Grants Manager for the Packard Foundation, I processed many grants to Save the Children and sent many a large check from our offices. Now, we don’t have a lot of disposable income and can’t send hefty checks, but we can be there, cheer them on, raise awareness, and have fun in the process.
I was very impressed with their choice of brand ambassador. Jennifer Garner is a happily married parent of two with a genuine passion for the cause and all the ways we can teach our children in the kitchen, on the field, and about ways to help others less fortunate. She is utterly unpretentious, sweet, and funny. A rare combination in the entertainment world. Mom bloggers can be hard to impress in some respects, but we left with a great deal of respect for her, personally, and for what she does. Once again, she was rockin’ my kid of shoes; this time, they were turquoise, Converse-type chucks.
It was nice to reconnect with Marty O’Gorman, general manager of Frigidaire, who hosted the previous event, The Kids’ Cooking Academy. He’d read our blogs the day before, and made a point of knowing a bit about us and asking how they can improve how they reach out to us and what more we could do to build on what they are already doing. I said, “Look, you’re combining families, children’s charities, appliances we wear out on a regular basis, and a terrific role model. And you invite us to participate and take very good care of us while we’re here. You couldn’t make it any easier for us to be supportive. By the way, I’m available for any sort of consulting gig. Heh. No, really.”
Then, he asked if the kids were enjoying the games as much as the cooking lessons, just as one of my kids walked up. I said to my son, “You liked the Cooking Academy, right?”
“Oh, come on, you had a great time.”
ARGH. Marty laughed. I hope.
Later, in the car, I said, “You know that guy I was talking to when I asked you about the last event?”
“He’s the CEO. Well played.”
He closed his eyes and winced. “Did you tell him I was a moody teen?”
“Something like that.”
Jiminy. They sure know how to put on an event, though – the styling was perfect, every touch in the style of old-time baseball.
We had lemonade and iced tea in Mason jars, shelled peanuts, caramel corn, pretzels, ice-cold sodas, and corn dogs. Granted they were fancy corn dogs, but still. Perfect for the day.
